Lip tints have a fascinating history, dating back to ancient civilizations where natural pigments were used to enhance beauty. The Egyptians were among the first to create lip stains using red ochre and carmine, often mixed with oils or fats for application. Cleopatra herself was known to use crushed ants and beetles to achieve her signature red lips.
In ancient Greece, women used crushed mulberries and strawberries to stain their lips, while Roman women applied beeswax mixed with red pigments derived from plants. During the Elizabethan era, bright red lips were fashionable, with women using cochineal dye (derived from insects) and gum Arabic to create long-lasting tints.
By the 19th century, advancements in cosmetic production led to synthetic dyes, making lip tints more accessible to the general public. Today, lip tints continue to evolve, offering lightweight, long-lasting color with hydrating ingredients.
